Comic illustrator What JJ tells Arthur Tam just why he translates his sexual on a into hot men and adorable wood land creatures
Sometimes Hong Kong's a lot demanding work culture could have quite a few enlightening benefits. Just when you assume you're about to get crushed within wave of pressure, you might provide you with the realisation that you should steer a better life towards doing something that actually allows you to happy. That's exactly what happened so that it will comic artist Hello JJ related with webcomic Hello Guilty (he strategy wish for his real name as being revealed), who suffered from serious chapters of exhaustion, during which he'd warp and end up in the hospital for days at this time.
That's the wake-up call it attended for JJ to change jobs and furthermore pursue his dream of not only being truly a cartoonist, but a graphic and furthermore sexually provocative cartoonist that ruffles a mountain of feathers. Wearing 2013, he started Virgin Zoo, a set in which seemingly adorable animated heros would meet gruesome and burlesque ends, usually by decapitation, gunfire or the classic kitchen knife. Imagine Happy Tree Friends, but nastier. In one strip, Hello Guilty a bunny feeds her used bouchon to Teddy Dare – babies bear with a constant hard on ~ as an ice pop. This legend is, horrifyingly, based on the true legend about a HK domestic helper which people put used tampons in this employer's soup (queue the be violently ill sequence).
After a year, JJ not to mention tone things down with a new chain titled Hello Guilty, based on a few of 'fag hag bunny' from Pure Zoo. Here, the 29-year-old opts for more detailed short storylines which experts state centre around gay social discourse with topics that range from human relationship issues and HIV testing so that it will narcissism and the process of coming out. Nearly all done with a cute, cheeky consider of humour with slight subtleties in translations between English and furthermore Cantonese. Now with a substantial cult following, JJ has grown to a collaborative stage in the career and has worked with NGOs such as HK Pride Parade Committee and furthermore AIDS Concern to promote STD assessment for young gays. Time Out foretells the young artist about a few of inspirations, aspirations and why she created the 'fag hag bunny'.
Will have you always been interested in art and contest?
I loved drawing since I was obviously a kid. I never got virtually formal training but I think its in my genes because my parents are pretty artistic. Mum is an illustrator and dad is a designer. I merely follow what they did and evolved from several.
Where do you usually get your afflatus from?
For Hello Guilty, I do get my inspirations from the best everyday life living as a gay the world. The personality of each character regarded as a different side of me. Contain specialties such as the main character Hello Guilty, which happened to be a fag hag rabbit who distributora handsome gays to be her house animals. Perhaps that's my secret fairy tale! I also get inspiration from the best other gay friends and even adult dating stories from my straight female buddys.
Did Happy Tree Friends by any means inspire you to start Virgin Jungle? And why the sexually attention grabbing twist?
Virgin Zoo is the pionero to Hello Guilty. Inspirations of Virgin Zoo include Happy Christmas tree Friends, Joan Cornella, Takashi Murakami and last but not least – Hello Pet. I started Virgin Zoo is helpful I wanted to draw attention to topics which could be commonly a stigma in the humankind. I wanted to touch on the themes related with sex, drugs, homosexuality and gore and embrace them with adorable cartoon characters, so it creates a juxtaposition that would increase a strong emotional response.
What made you would like to illustrate specifically on gay issues?
I have a lot of gay friends and that i want to draw something that are related to them and myself. Gay on the web comics are also something budding to Taiwan, but I've found that aren't any notable ones to Hong Kong, so I've decided to focus on something myself. I draw the best comics with the mentality that its by men for men, unlike BL comics (Boy Love), which are by women for women. It's a completely different category altogether. I often find BL storylines very unrealistic.
What kind of communication do you want to get across with your reviews and comics?
For the LGBTI persons, my message is that life is unique being gay. For the straight persons, my message is that life is more enjoyable being with more LGBTI people.
Considered shown your family your artwork?
Will you develop Hello Guilty into a specific thing more in the future? Perhaps an actual cartoon video?
It will definitely be awesome have got Hello Guilty go places. I expect that one day Hello Guilty is going to something that's ironically LGBTI, such as how hello kitty cases for iPhone 6 plus is ironically Land der aufgehenden sonne (umgangssprachlich).
